There were a lot of success stories around the league in ’06, including both New York teams pacing the MLB in wins with 97.

1.) Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies: 58 Home Runs and 147 RBIs

A breakout season for the ages, Howard put his name on the map and claimed the NL MVP award over Albert Pujols. Both his 58 home runs and 147 RBIs paced the Majors, and his .313 batting average was also among the best in baseball. Howard would put up impressive power numbers during the next several seasons but would never come close to the stats he put up during his lone MVP season. The Phillies slugger likely could have done more damage, but he was Intentionally Walked 37 times, just one away from Barry Bonds’ lead leading 38.

2.) Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins: .347 Batting Average

Pop quiz. Since the year 2000, what catcher has the best single season batting average? If you guessed Joe Mauer, you would be correct (the title may have led you there but that is fine). Mauer actually hit .365 in 2009, which is the best catcher average since Cal McVey in 1877, which truthfully, I do not know if I count. Mauer has the top two best averages from the catcher position in the 2000’s, with his 2006 season taking the second spot. Mauer managed to just beat out Freddy Sanchez of the Pirates and Derek Jeter of the, well, New York Yankees to claim the MLB batting crown.

3.) Carlos Zambrano, Chicago Cubs: 6 Home Runs

Is there anything cooler than the now virtually extinct art of home run hitting pitchers? I personally cannot think of anything. Zambrano, known for his fiery personality and big arm, proved throughout his career that he could hit the long ball. Zambrano actually has 24 career home runs, which is among the most from a pitcher in the history of the game. Some interesting comparisons: Yadier Molina and Shane Victorino, who both had over 400 at bats, tied Zambrano (73 at bats) for home runs in 2006.
