So yes, all of my written selections for Week 1 were wrong. All five of them, and it wasn’t particularly close. I did select every single game (ironically with less confidence than the ones I wrote about) and did not do too bad. Click here for proof. Or don’t, I wouldn’t believe me either.
This is a new week, a new time. There are actually some on paper good games. There are still some on paper horrible games. That is the life of early season College Football.
New week, new us? Probably not.
Rutgers University (0-1) vs Boston College (0-1)
After what was arguably the worst loss in program history (and I attended the 78-0 loss against Michigan in 2016), this may be the most must win game Rutgers has ever had. It’s not the most important game on the schedule. Honestly, in terms of Big Ten and ACC intrigue, it is probably towards the bottom. It cannot possibly get worse for the Scarlet Knights (something I can promise you I have said many, many times.
I actually had BC covering 7.5 points last week against Cincinnati, and I felt they could win outright. I was wrong. They, like Rutgers, got blown out by several scores. So what happened when two teams that I believed (and let me down) face each other? Absolute chaos and a subpar game that no one will watch besides me.
Rutgers University, +3.5
Ohio State University (1-0) vs University of Texas (1-0)
Ohio State took this one just a year ago, but it is safe to this game will have a different look to it. A lot of players have returned for OSU and Texas, but a lot of players, talented, future NFL draft picks, have joined both teams as well.
If you consider the Cotton Bowl (which I do) Texas actually dropped two games to Ohio State in 2025. Both losses were entirely different, but one thing was in common: Texas struggled offensively. Each took some time to heat up last year, but it’s safe to say Longhorn fans are expecting a bit more in the early window of the season. This would be a big step if he can get it done at home.
University of Texas, -1.5
San Diego State University (1-0) vs University of California Los Angeles (1-0)
I have the Aztecs winning the PAC-12, and I still can see a path. The path maybe cluttered and hard to get through, but there is a path all the same. Do they need to beat a Big 10 team to win the PAC-12? No, not at all. Would it help in making people buy in to SDSU? Yea, probably.
UCLA needed to show they made some positive changes in their match against Cal, and they definitely proved they have taken at least a step forward. UCLA won by 3 scores, and managed to do it on the road against a Cal team that had some believers. Now, with their home opener, UCLA can make another statement if they can handily take care of business against a brand new PAC-12 team.
University of California Los Angeles, -12.5
Washington State University (0-1) vs Kansas State University (1-0)
WSU held their own against a ranked Washington, on the road last week. The defense gave Washington fits all day, and even if the box score didn’t show it, they were one or two plays for making this game competitive to the end. I liked what I saw from the defense, the offense was nothing to write home about.
K-State played Nicholls State, and won by a billion points. Aside from being an easy walk through, it got the jitters out. I definitely feel that Washington State having a battle against a ranked rival can have them more football ready than KSU. But will it be enough?
Washington State University, +18.5
Oklahoma University (1-0) vs University of Michigan (1-0)
There are a lot of people very high on Oklahoma this season, and I am apart of that group. While UTEP may not be a formidable foe, it is nice to see a solid 51-0 showing. Defensively, the Sooners have been a force for a while, but the offense will need to click to make a real, deep CFP run. Traveling to Ann Arbor will test how real that offense actually is.
With Michigan, the embarrassment alone of being the most talked about game of Week 1 has to be enough to motivate them. What should have been a devastating loss to a MAC school, turned into a win and an opportunity to silence the haters by beating a favored, SEC school that is coming to the Big House.
Oklahoma University, -5.5
